How to speak French - Why you should learn how to speak French

If you are reading this, then it’s more than likely that you are interested in knowing how to speak French. You may be concerned with the difficulty involved, you may have heard that learning how to speak French is a very difficult task, which will take years of continuous study and practice. During the next few paragraphs I intend to explain to you just some of the many advantages of speaking French, and finish by explaining that although learning to speak French does indeed involve some work and effort on your part, it can be interesting and fun. It is also a goal, which can be achieved in a lot less time than you might imagine.

Some 250 million people speak French across the world, including both primary and secondary speakers of the language. So, it’s not just France in which the ability to speak French is useful, but it’s also useful in many other countries such as Belgium, parts of Africa, Switzerland, parts of Canada, the Seychelles and numerous other countries. From this you can see that if you learn how to speak French you will be able to converse with the local people, with ease and confidence, in many different countries.

In some parts of the French speaking world there may be few English speakers, and to be honest, much of the time they feel that visitors should learn their language. Hence they often do not overexert themselves when trying to help a foreigner who does not speak any French at all. On the other hand these same people are happy to help those who can speak at least some of their language.
There are of course areas where few speak English and generally only French is spoken, in order to communicate in such places knowledge of the French Language is essential. If you learn how to speak French you can easily converse with people who have a limited knowledge of English, and also converse with those who pretend to have a limited knowledge of English.

If you learn how to speak French you will be able to

* Ask for directions.

* Order food in a restaurant

* Deal with problems such as car break down

* Deal with any medical problems you or perhaps one of your children may have.

* Find your way around airports, railway stations etc

* Chat and enjoy conversing with the locals.

* Gain respect and good will from local people as you can speak their language.

French is one of the easier languages to master, but learning to speak French does require a fair investment in time and effort. French words are often pronounced differently from the way in which an English person would tend to pronounce them, there are also differences in the usage of verbs and grammar, which must be understood.

Traditionally the person who desired to speak French would enrol in a night class or buy a printed course. The main problem with a printed course is that it does not enable the reader to hear how the words are pronounced. With the night class, although the student has opportunity to hear the French words pronounced, when the class has finished, well it’s finished. No chance to hear the words spoken again, next lesson it will be some other part of the course, the disadvantage is obvious. An audio course on a CD or cassette tape enables the pronunciation to be heard as often as desired, but the best method by far is a modern multimedia course. They are usually available as an Internet download or on DVD, and consist of various elements. Firstly these may be audio / video and enable the user not only to hear the spoken word, but also to see a native French speaker speak them on screen. One can then repeat the spoken words after the French speaker has uttered them and compare how well your effort was compared with his. In addition pages of text are available for onscreen study or to print out, also there are various special other additions such as games and interactive quizzes designed to make the whole process an enjoyable experience.
